Roofer in Avonmouth
Roof repairs and re-roofing for Avonmouth village — Victorian and Edwardian houses that grew up with the docks, close to the mouth of the Severn.
A village built for the docks
From mudbank to port
Avonmouth began in 1865 with a railway station and pier, and the docks opened in 1877. Housing followed the docks, and the Miles family of Kings Weston House shaped much of the village’s growth, with Edwardian buildings by their estate architect, Frederick Bligh Bond.
Listed terraces on Gloucester Road
Nos. 7–26 Gloucester Road and the Royal Hotel, built around the 1870s, are listed Grade II. Historic England records brick ridge stacks, a pantile roof and scalloped barge-boards — exactly the kind of detail a careless repair can lose.
Arts and Crafts on Avonmouth Road
The former Bristol Tramways depot of 1915, also Grade II, has a tiled roof, steep gables and a curved cupola roof on its corner turret.
Living at the edge of the Severn
Flood defences
The £80m Avonmouth Severnside scheme along 17km of the Severn shore protects around 2,500 homes. The Severn has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world.
Rising sea level
Met Office projections suggest sea level at Avonmouth could be 0.24–0.36m higher by 2050. It does not change how a roof is fixed, but it is part of why good drainage around the house matters.
Wind from both ways
South-westerlies dominate, but the Met Office records frequent north-easterlies at Bristol along the line of the Bristol Channel. We check ridges and verges on both slopes.
Roofing work we do in Avonmouth
On the older terraces we deal with slipped clay tiles and slates, chimney flashings, parapet and valley leaks, and re-roofs where the original roof has reached the end of its life. Later housing brings concrete-tile repairs, flat roofs and guttering. On listed buildings we work like for like and flag anything that needs consent.
