Leadwork

Leadwork in Shirehampton

Chimney flashings, soakers, valleys, bay roofs and dormer cheeks — dressed in code lead following the Lead Sheet Association’s guidance.

What we do

Leadwork on local roofs

Chimney flashings

Brick chimney stacks are part of the look of the village — the council’s appraisal picks out red-brick chimneys with yellow clay pots in The Bradleys. Every one needs sound flashings where it passes through the roof.

Stepped and cover flashings

Where a roof meets a wall, lead is chased into the brickwork and stepped down the slope. Failed pointing here is a common leak.

Valleys

Lead-lined valleys between slopes carry a lot of water. Splits, thin lead or debris dams cause leaks into the room below.

Bay and porch roofs

Lead-covered bays and canopies on older houses need the right code of lead and properly sized sheets to cope with expansion.

Dormer cheeks and aprons

Dormers in the Garden Suburb and elsewhere rely on lead to keep the joints watertight.

Parapets and party walls

Parapets on party walls are recorded in the Garden Suburb. Their cappings and gutters need careful lead detailing.

Doing it properly

Why leadwork fails

Sheets too long

Lead expands and contracts. Pieces that are too long for their code crack along fixings. We cut to recommended lengths.

Wrong code

Thin lead in a valley or on a bay will not last. We specify the code for the job.

Poor fixing

Lead wedged loosely into a mortar joint will work out over time. We chase, wedge and point it properly.

Theft and replacement

Where lead is a theft risk or the owner prefers, we can discuss lead-alternative products — and are clear about their limits.

Questions

Leadwork questions

Can you repair just the flashing around my chimney?

Yes. Chimney flashing replacement is one of the most common jobs we do. We will also check the flaunching and pots while we are up there.

Do you replace lead on listed buildings?

We can carry out like-for-like leadwork. Any changes affecting a listed building need listed building consent first, and we will advise you to check.
