Pitched and flat roofs on the post-war Lawrence Weston estate, and the older estate cottages around Kings Weston.

Lawrence Weston roofs

A post-war estate with its own rules

Built from the late 1940s

Land at Lawrence Weston was compulsorily purchased in 1947 and building was under way by 1948–49, under City Architect Nelson Meredith. Much of the housing is now privately owned, so roofs that were once maintained together are now on very different timetables.

Flat roofs by design

On Mancroft Avenue, Barrowmead Avenue and Long Cross, Meredith’s team developed a flat-roof house type where a traditional pitched roof would have interfered with protected views up to Kings Weston House. These flat roofs are the main roof of the house, and they need flat-roof expertise — see our flat roofs and EPDM page.

Cast-concrete houses

The Kings Weston Action Group records cast-concrete Easiform houses on Mancroft Avenue. As with any non-traditional construction, major roof work should take the structure into account.

Kings Weston

Next to a Vanbrugh landmark

Kings Weston House

Built by Sir John Vanbrugh between 1710 and 1725 and listed Grade I, the house is famous for its arcade of chimney stacks linked by arches. It is the reason parts of Lawrence Weston have flat roofs.

Kingsweston Court

A late-18th-century terrace on Kings Weston Lane, listed Grade II, with concrete tile and pantile roofs — a reminder that even listed roofs here have been altered over time.

Conservation-minded repairs

Near listed buildings and protected views, we keep repairs low-key and like for like, and flag anything that may need consent.

Roofing work we do in Lawrence Weston

Typical jobs include replacing failed felt flat roofs with EPDM, repairing pitched concrete-tile roofs, re-pointing verges, and replacing fascias, soffits and gutters. If you live on one of the flat-roofed streets, we would advise against assuming a pitched conversion is possible — the flat roofs were deliberate, and planning may take the same view.
